Some people use generators as backup to the utility supply, operating the generators only when there is an outage on the utility grid. Others use generators as the main source of power, either because there is no utility service available, or because they believe it is cheaper to operate a generator than to buy electricity from the utility. In most cases, the power flowing from an alternating current (AC) power system to a consumer would have two components: the true power, and the reactive power. The true power is that component that does the work (i.e. spins the fan or produces light in a lamp), while the reactive power does no real work but contributes to the load on the power system. The vector sum of these two components is called the Apparent Power. Utilities usually charge small consumers, such as residential consumers, only for the energy consumed using the true power. For some large consumers, however, there is usually a 2-part tariff. These consumers pay for the energy used by way of the true power, and they also pay for the apparent power. This is because utilities incur higher costs to provide and maintain generation and transmission and distribution equipment at capacities that can handle the reactive loads and the real loads. There is therefore an incentive for some consumers to keep their apparent power demand as low as possible. This can be achieved by keeping the reactive power to a minimum.
